The Effect of the Oxygen Concentration in the River on Gammarus Pulex Essay Example Essay Example

The Effect of the Oxygen Concentration in the River on Gammarus Pulex Essay Example Paper The Effect of the Oxygen Concentration in the River on Gammarus Pulex Essay Introduction Basis: Whilst doing a gathering concentrate on the biodiversity of life in various pieces of the stream, I saw a distinction in the quantity of Gammerus Pulex. I figured this may be because of the distinction in abiotic factors, for example, pH and stream rate. In the wake of doing some exploration on this species I found that they are especially attached to more oxygenated water, along these lines I developed my speculation to examine this.Gammarus Pulex: This species is all the more generally known as the new water shrimp. It is commonly found in shallow new water waterways, despite the fact that they have been known to endure lakes with a stream running into it for instance. This is most likely because of the higher oxygen levels in the water. They invest the majority of their energy under stones in the bed of the waterway and feed on deteriorating plant and creature material. They run from being just two or three millimeters to up to three centimeters and can be any shading from light orange to dim and brown. They are anything but difficult to spot by their circular segment molded bodies and their particular development. They impel themselves through the water by a progression of compressions and relaxations and travel on their side. In spite of the fact that it is hard to see they are likewise continually vibrating. This delivers a steady flow of water over their gills at the base of their thoracic legs. At the point when the females are conveying eggs or youthful in their pockets they are hauled around by the males.Hypothesis: There will be a more prominent wealth of gammarus pulex in the more oxygenated destinations of the river.Null Hypothesis: There will be no relationship between the plenitude of gammarus pulex and the oxygenation of the stream sitesPlanningI have picked two locales where I believe that the oxygen levels will be different:The first site is on Hope Farm which is exclusive. The proprietors frequently utilize the land for touching creatu res and it is conceivable that the dirt may have been treated before for horticultural purposes so it is significant that I measure the pH and supplement levels of the water. As barely any individuals are permitted access to this site it is basically undisturbed. Anyway just around ten meters upstream from site I am utilizing is a little weir. This is probably going to join more oxygen into the water. The zone is obvious from trees and crops and is encircled by glade type land. There are reeds and other greenery on the banks. The riverbed itself is fundamentally comprised of shingle and the water is extremely clear. It was x m deepThe second site is at Letheringsett Ford. It is arranged close by a solitary track nation street and pretty much ten meters upstream there is a little passage that prompts a few private properties. It is encircled by rural land utilized for arable cultivating. Again the land may have been treated for this reason so it is significant I measure the pH and su pplement levels in the water. The riverbed itself is comprised of bigger stones. There were some debris trees on one of the banks and grass on the other. It was xm profound, fundamentally the same as Home Farm. Anyway the water appeared to be somewhat increasingly turbid. I anticipate that this site will be less oxygenated as there isn't a weir or some other consistent water turbulence.Sampling TechniquesThe first thing I should consider is the means by which to take my example of the gammarus pulex from the waterway, I have summed up the points of interest as well as burdens of a couple of potential strategies for sampling:Sweep Sampling is where a net is cleared before you while remaining in the stream in a figure of eight development or from side to side. It very well may be estimated by timing the measure of time spent clearing the water. One issue with this is if the invertebrate you are attempting to catch lives in the bed under rocks for instance you are probably not going to catch an exact number of the creature in the territory. Another issue is the means by which to keep the activity of the net predictable and as the individual is settling on where to put it a predisposition might be caused.Kick Sampling is where somebody remains on the riverbed and kicks advances and in reverse upsetting the riverbed and holds a net downstream to get the spineless creatures with the flow. This can likewise be effortlessly estimated by timing to what extent to ‘kick’. This estimates the quantity of the invertebrate whether it lives underneath the stones or in the stream water itself. As the idea of the kick is created by the individual holding the net consideration must be taken to maintain a strategic distance from bias.Stone Washing is another elective where stones are expelled from the riverbed and washed in clear water to evacuate any spineless creatures on the stone. It is difficult to gauge and keep it solid as each stone is an alternate size and s hape. Additionally a few spineless creatures may tumble off the stone when it is moved which would make it wrong. This method must be utilized if the spineless creatures being tallied live on the stones. Predisposition could be brought about by the individual picking the stones.VariablesIndependent Variable: River SiteDependent Variable: Abundance of gammarus pulexOther potential factors may should be controlled or estimated and assessed while investigating the results:Abiotic Factors and how I will control or measure them:FactorWhat I will do about itpH of WaterMeasure with general indicatorTurbidityImmeasurable in view of shallowness of riverSpeed of River FlowMeasure utilizing a stream meterTemperature of WaterMeasure utilizing a thermometerAmmonia, Phosphate and Nitrate Levels in WaterMeasure with testing kitsLight IntensityI will attempt to do the analyses at the two locales quicklyone after the other around the same time to diminish variationAnthropogenic Factors: Distance awa y from portages, creature intersections and so on Pollution of water and riverbedI should watch and think about these anthropogenic factors and consider their significance at both sites. All these abiotic and anthropogenic elements can cause variety in the positivity of the natural surroundings for specific species. Regardless of whether a factor doesn't explicitly influence the Gammarus Pulex, in the event that they improve the conditions for a predator or serious animal types, at that point the quantity of Gammarus Pulex will diminish. In another manner if the conditions should support a portion of the littler living beings that they feed on then there will be an expansion in the quantity of Gammarus Pulex.Reliability and Accuracy Considerations:The different elements that I should be mindful so as to control include my system. For instance my strategy for testing must be kept consistent and deliberate. I should ensure that I don't permit any oxygen into my examples of water for ox ygen testing as this could make my outcomes off base. To keep up unwavering quality I will kick test for a similar measure of time without fail. I will likewise take a few arrangements of abiotic information to guarantee that the outcomes are dependable. I will guarantee that my estimating strategy in the recognizable proof and tallying of the Gammarus Pulex is consistant, again so as not to make my outcomes inaccurate. When playing out the Winkler Test in the research facility I will take care to maintain a strategic distance from defilement of different synthetic compounds. I will wash out my volumetric flagon each time with refined water. I will take care to peruse the pipette and burette to the base of the meniscus. I will run the fluid through the burette for some time into a waste measuring glass to ensure the stream is full and there are no air bubbles. Every one of these insurances ought to improve the exactness and unwavering quality of the outcomes. I will rehash the titrat ions to watch that they are solid. I have likewise taken consideration picking my mechanical assembly. I have utilized the biggest sums conceivable in order to improve accuracy.Apparatus Net Deep white plate Tape measure Sample bottles Manganese chloride Potassium iodide Sodium hydroxide Thermometer Speed estimating contraption Safety glasses Magnifying pot Plastic spoon Potassium, smelling salts and nitate testing packs pH testing kitRisk Assesment Harmful synthetic concoctions †security goggles Bacteria from water †wash hands, no eating Tripping †glass Care of water levels No solitary working Stranger dangerPreliminary examination Length of time of kicksKicking Time/secNumber of Shrimps102220263036403950406041Trial Method Kick test for 30 seconds 2 kicks for every subsequent Six example zones Upstream each opportunity to keep flotsam and jetsam from past examples Empty net into plate of clean water Empty each in turn into amplifying pot and keep a count score Releas e once more into stream downstream of sampling51627384Trial ResultsSample AreaNumber of ShrimpsRunning Mean12723126.0032929.0042427.7552727.6062627.3372727.2982927.50Total224I have plotted a chart of the running intend to guarantee that I have utilized enough example zones to ensure my examination is solid. As should be obvious from the diagram, my running mean becomes increasingly steady. I think I have utilized enough example zones in spite of the fact that it isn't as steady as I expected so I will attempt to take more example areas.Changes to the methodAs a consequence of my primer and preliminary tests I have decided to change a couple of parts of my technique. Right off the bat when I began to kick test I found an extensive variable in the speed at which I kicked at and the quality of my kicking. A variety in both of these could imply that I would create diverse measure of unsettling influence to the riverbed and hence would have a not truly solid number of gammarus pulex. The speed of my kicking I can without much of a stretch comprehend by utilizing a stopwatch to quantify the measure of kicks I do every second. I concluded that an appropriate rate would be two kicks every second. Concerning the quality of the kick, I can't think about a method of estimating, accordingly I should screen this with my own judgment and attempt and keep it the equivalent. In my fundamental work on the length of kicking time I concluded that I would utilize a kicking time of forty seconds.I have chosen to change the measure of tests I take to twelve examples yet utilize a similar inspecting technique, see plan below:951106211731284Otherwi

Corporal Punishment Is it Necessary - Free Essay Example

Abstract The present paper is about the use of corporal punishment for the children. It discusses the three main areas related to corporal punishment such as is it really necessary to use corporal punishment? Or is it an effective mean of discipline for children? And the laws about corporal punishment, and other alternative techniques to corporal punishment. The paper also mentions some studies conducted on corporal punishment to see its consequences on children. Most of the studies suggested that corporal punishment has negative consequences for children, thats why some of the countries have banned corporal punishment in their countries because it was creating many aggressive and anti-social behaviors among children. It is concluded that corporal punishment is not an effective mean of learning rules and regulations for children but there must be some alternative techniques for the children to learn rules. The most important strategies involve unconditional positive regard, responsive nature of parents, promotion of words than action, and reinforcing the desired behaviors. Collectively, psychologists do not recommend the use to corporal punishment and believe that corporal punishment should not be used in homes and schools for children. Keywords. Corporal punishment, legislation, and alternatives Introduction Corporal punishment in schools or homes could be defined as any physical activity to maintain the discipline of the school, usually provided by parents, teachers, or school instructors as a punishment if students misbehave in some manner. There are different types of corporal punishment such as pinching (anywhere on the body), slapping (anywhere, but mostly on face or hands), and spanking (generally with any object or stick). The application of corporal punishment could be done privately in a room or in schools in front of the whole class. Some people believe that corporal punishment is a method of maintaining discipline, but other people say when this method is applied practically, it doesnt give effective results. Corporal punishment is banned in some countries, though it is still used in many countries (Gilles, 2018). The first state of United States that banned corporal punishment was New Jersey in 1867. It took a whole century for another state to ban the corporal punishment. In this era, almost 31 states have banned corporal punishment in schools. Still, some of those states use corporal punishment in their schools. On the other hand, private schools tend to avoid the use of corporal punishment for the students because they more focus on the modern methods of learning which are more effective than corporal punishment. The states in which corporal punishment is not banned and still used (both for public and private schools), all types of punishments are not allowed. They have allowed specific types of punishment and the information about that punishment is written in a document i.e. which type of punishment is allowed, how much strokes should be given, and who is permitted to give the punishment, etc. Even for some schools, they must have to take permission from the parents before practicing the punishment for their children. That document is also helpful in keeping a record about consistent punishment, clear and balance rules for all the students, and to inform the parents about the consequences of violating any rule (Gilles, 2018). Is Corporal Punishment an Effective Mean of Discipline? Corporal punishment is a widely used technique in families and schools and it is still a controversial topic to discuss when it comes to the childs psychological development. A large meta-analysis study (of 88 types of researches) was conducted by Elizabeth Thompson Gershoff (2010) to explore the effects of corporal punishment on children. She noticed both positive and negative behaviors in children that were associated with corporal punishment. During her analysis of 62 years of data, she noticed the eleven types of behaviors including in childhood (immediate compliance, moral internalization, quality of relationship with parent, and physical abuse from that parent), three behaviors in both childhood and adulthood (low psychological well-being, aggression, and antisocial behavior), and just one in adulthood (abuse of children and spouse). She found a strong connection between corporal punishment and all these behaviors. From these behaviors, only one behavior that was associated wit h corporal punishment was positive such as childs immediate compliance, but other ten behaviors associated with corporal punishment were negative such as aggressive behavior and anti-social behavior. So, she concluded that corporal punishment is only effective when we want a child to comply immediately, otherwise, it can turn into physical abuse and physical maltreatment. The findings of the meta-analysis showed that the aggressive nature of the child depends upon the severity of corporal punishment, the more severely a child was hit, the more aggressive he would become. In her study, Gershoff also described a wider amount of literature about parenting styles to explain why corporal punishment cause negative consequences for children. First of all, corporal punishment doesnt help children to differentiate between right and wrong direction. Secondly, it makes children afraid to misbehave when parents are present, but in the absence of parents, they are more likely to misbehave than other children. At the end, Gershoff concluded that parents use excessive amount of corporal punishment, but they do not tell the exact severity that is the reason, it mainly has negative effects on chi ldren and whatever the reason is, we as a psychologist cannot recommend the use of corporal punishment for the children because it is not effective (Gershoff, 2010). What does Law say about Corporal Punishment? Nowadays, many countries have started to take up legal bans on the use of corporal punishment increasingly. It is an interesting fact that countries that have a representative type of government have legally banned corporal punishment. Several governments have taken the step to ban the corporal punishment in the schools as well. Countries with the non-representative government have different perspectives regarding the use of corporal punishment for children. Different laws that banned corporal punishment have different perspectives regarding the use of language and range of punishments. Most of the studies conducted to compare the attitudes and behaviors of people prior and after banning the corporal punishment suggested that general support of people declines after the enactment of the law about banning corporal punishment in states. Similarly, behaviors related to declining in corporal punishment were universal after the enactment of corporal punishment laws (Zolotor Puzia, 2010). Studies also suggested that when there is a lot of data is available then attitude and behaviors or people regarding corporal punishment support start to decline even before the ban of corporal punishment and it continues to decline even after the ban of corporal punishment. So, studies concluded that legislation of corporal punishment is not an objective part, but it is an important aspect of peoples cultural values. In any country with a representative government, the ban is not applied in a vacuum but there is enough evidence present about that issue then ban is considered by the lawmakers. The same thing happens with the corporal punishment, whenever a country wants to ban on this, they have a history of declined supportive behaviors of corporal punishment. And when a ban is enforced in any country, its practice is reinforced to maintain a healthy environment in any country. A ban on corporal punishment cannot be enforced without any solid evidence against its use. At the end, th e study also suggested that when there is a decline in the use of corporal punishment, the rate of severe physical abuse for the children also declines (Zolotor Puzia, 2010). What should be Effective Alternatives to Corporal Punishment? There are a lot of programs and alternatives to corporal punishment which provide a greater understanding to the parents about the psychological development of their children. These programs also help parents to learn effective parenting strategies that can lead to less violent behaviors in children and teens, they eliminate the helplessness and irritation in parents that is a cause of corporal punishment usually. There are many benefits of learning new alternatives to maintain discipline and the most important technique is reinforcing the desired behavior rather than punishing the undesired behavior. Because most of the children respond very poorly to the corporal punishment, they need more effective alternative techniques for discipline. Some of the techniques are described here (Carter, 2018). First, there is a need to create an encouraging environment for children. For that purpose, parents need to change their approach that focuses on undesired behavior to the approach that focuses on desired behavior and when the child shows desired behavior, parents should encourage them and give any reward to him so that he will more likely to repeat same behavior in future. The second technique is about giving clear and simple instruction while maintaining a proper eye contact with the child, so the use of words must be appropriate and simple for the children because they do not like to hear long and complex instructions which are not understandable for them. When parents can sense when the child is going to misbehave in certain situations, then they must have some box of toys or any other activity for the entertainment and engagement of the child. Most importantly, the parents must be responsive to their children and must provide unconditional positive regard to their children becau se it will build a strong connection of trust between their relationships. There are some behaviors that must not be ignored, so parents must find some effective punishment for the children to use occasionally not daily, that will help them learn to differentiate between right and wrong behaviors. One of the most effective ways to improve a childs development is the promotion of words instead of actions because if a child would learn to verbalize his feelings, he will delay his actions. So, this process would be helpful for a child to learn self-regulation, decision making, and self-awareness (Carter, 2018). Conclusion It is concluded that all children misbehave in some manner and when they do all the parents face some challenges to teach their children the appropriate discipline. It is a very irritating situation for the parents when their children act out of their significant behavior and which is not socially acceptable. I agree that children need to learn certain rules and regulation to fit in society and they expect their parents to do this. But there are many ways than corporal punishment to teach the children basic rules of the society such as positive reinforcement, taking out the incentives and physical punishment. I am not in favor of using physical punishment for the children in their childhood because physical punishment may have a short-term influence on the children but mostly has long-term negative consequences such as poor self-esteem, fear, aggression, depression, anxiety, and personality problems. In extreme situations, physical punishment can cause more abusive and severe behavior towards children. Abuse can cause arrest, injury, loss of custody, jail-time, and in even the death of a child. I always wonder why parents use physical punishment when there are many influential and beneficial ways to deal with the children when they dont behave in a socially acceptable way. The most significant ways to initiate is positive, healthy, and supportive behavior with the children. You can provide them with clear instructions about the desired behaviors so that they would have an idea about it and when they perform the desired behavior, make sure you provide them with an incentive. In other words, reinforcement (positive negative) is the most important way to learn acceptable behaviors to your children. References Carter, S. (2018). Alternatives to physical punishment. Development Of A Service Innovation - 2807 Words

Introduction The aim of the report is to discuss the development of a service innovation in a hospital care setting. Therefore the innovation being introduced in the report will focus on the pain management tool for assessing chronic conditions in service users with dementia in hospital settings. As pain is a very subjective experience it is important that the tool is specifically based on the individual’s own way of expressing and communicating their pain in relation to their chronic conditions. The first section of this report will review and evaluate a body of evidence to support the development of the pain management tool by looking at the subject of the change management proposal, the relevant stakeholders and the change agent to†¦show more content†¦The Pain management tool is known as â€Å"How to keep me pain free† (See Appendix 1). The tool’s focus is to provide person centred care and holistic assessment for the service user. The chart will also incorporate the service user’s family and carers to assist nurses in the assessment process. The relevant stakeholders in the change are: †¢ Dementia Specialist nurses †¢ Patients with dementia †¢ Nurses on the ward †¢ Family and carers †¢ Specialist Pain Nurses †¢ Pain team Consultant The Change agent: †¢ The change agent chosen for the innovation is the ward sister who will advocate, lead and implement change (Gopee and Galloway (2014, p.154). Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a decline in mental ability that has an impact on a person’s daily living. By reviewing literature on dementia it was evident that there are currently 800,000 people with dementia in the UK. One in three people over 65 will develop dementia and there will be over a million people with dementia by 2021 (Alzheimer’s Society, 2013). According to the Alzheimer’s Society (2013) pain is still poorly detected and undertreated in people with dementia admitted to acute hospital sectors. This is because those with dementia or with more than mild cognitive impairment can often find it difficult to express that they are in pain or are unable to articulate the level of pain that they are in (Banicek,2010). The things that really set him apart from his peersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ his unusual eyes, his ability to see things change in a way that he cannot explainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ trouble him, but he does not let them bother him too much, since the communitys emphasis on politeness makes it easy for Jonas to conceal or ignore these little differences. Like any child in the community, Jonas is uncomfortable with the attention he receives when he is singled out as the new Receiver, preferring to blend in with his friends. Once Jonas begins his training with the Giver, however, the tendencies he showed in his earlier lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ his sensitivity, his heightened perceptual powers, his kindness to and interest in people, his curiosity about new experiences, his honesty, and his high intelligenceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ make him extremely absorbed in the memories the Giver has to transmit. In turn, the memories, with their rich sensory and emotional experiences, enhance all of Jonass unusual qualities. Within a year of training, he becomes extremely sensitive to beauty, pleasure, and suffering, deeply loving toward his family and the Giver, and fiercely passionate about his new beliefs and feelings. Things about the community that used to be mildly perplexing or troubling are now intensely frustrating or depressing, and Jonass inherent concern for others and desire for justice makes him yearn to make changes in the community, both to awaken other people to the richness of life and to stop the casual cruelty that is practiced in the community. Jonas is also very determined, committing to a task fully when he believes in it and willing to risk his own life for the sake of the people he loves. Although as a result of his training Jonas possesses more wisdom than almost anyone else in his community, he is still very young and knows little about life in the community itself. At twelve years old, Jonas is too young to control the powerful emotions that his training unleashes, and the natural hormonal imbalances of preadolescence make him especially passionate and occasionally unreasonable. Of course, his youth makes it possible for him to receive the memories and learn from themà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ if he were older, he might be less receptive to new experiences and emotionsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬ but he needs the guidance and wisdom of the Giver, who has life experience as well as memories, to help him keep all of his new experiences in perspective.
